Through the interference of Venus, Cupid’s jealous mother, Cupid drove Psyche away after she disobeyed his wishes by gazing upon him.
Overcome with despair, Psyche placed herself in the service of Venus, who ordered her to go to Persephone, Queen of the Underworld, and fetch a flask of beauty. Forbidden to open it, yet overcome with temptation, Psyche opened the flask, breathed in its fragrance, which was deathly to mortals, and perished.
Cupid, seeing Psyche fall, rushed frantically to her, and, after touching her with an arrow, and kissing her, he brought her back to life.
