Professor: Do you believe in GOD ?

Student : Absolutely, sir.

Professor : Is GOD good ?

Student : Sure.

Professor: Is GOD all powerful ?

Student : Yes.

Professor: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to GOD to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But GOD didn’t. How is this GOD good then? Hmm?

(Student was silent.)

Professor: You can’t answer, can you ? Let’s start again, young fella. Is GOD good?

Student : Yes.

Professor: Is satan good ?

Student : No.

Professor: Where does satan come from ?

Student : From … GOD …

Professor: That’s right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?

Student : Yes.

Professor: Evil is everywhere, isn’t it ? And GOD did make everything. Correct?

Student : Yes.

Professor: So who created evil ?

(Student did not answer.)

Professor: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don’t they?

Student : Yes, sir.

Professor: So, who created them ?

(Student had no answer.)

Professor: Science says you have 5 Senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son, have you ever seen GOD?

Student : No, sir.

Professor: Tell us if you have ever heard your GOD?

Student : No , sir.

Professor: Have you ever felt your GOD, tasted your GOD, smelt your GOD? Have you ever had any sensory perception of GOD for that matter?

Student : No, sir. I’m afraid I haven’t.

Professor: Yet you still believe in Him?

Student : Yes.

Professor : According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says your GOD doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son?

Student : Nothing. I only have my faith.

Professor: Yes, faith. And that is the problem Science has.

Student : Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

Professor: Yes.

Student : And is there such a thing as cold?

Professor: Yes.

Student : No, sir. There isn’t.

(The lecture theater became very quiet with this turn of events.)

Student : Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.

(There was pin-drop silence in the lecture theater.)

Student : What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Professor: Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?

Student : You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light. But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and its called darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness isn’t. If it is, well you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?

Professor: So what is the point you are making, young man ?

Student : Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Professor: Flawed ? Can you explain how?

Student : Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good GOD and a bad GOD. You are viewing the concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing.

Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Professor: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student : Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shook his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument was going.)

Student : Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor. Are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?

(The class was in uproar.)

Student : Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain?

(The class broke out into laughter. )

Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?

(The room was silent. The Professor stared at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Professor: I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son.

Student : That is it sir … Exactly ! The link between man & GOD is FAITH. That is all that keeps things alive and moving.

I wish we lived in a more barter-based society, because while I don’t have the money for such nice environs, the amount of personal time and work I’d be willing to trade would be more than fair.

1. Today, I operated on a little girl that was in a car accident. She desperately needed O- blood, which is a bit rare. We didn’t have any available, but her twin brother was at the hospital who had O- blood. I explained to him that it was a matter of life and death – that his sister needed his blood. He sat quietly for a moment, and then said goodbye to his parents. I didn’t think anything of it until after we took the blood we needed and he asked, “So when will I die?” He thought he was giving his life for hers. Thankfully, they’ll both be fine. MMT

2. Today was the tenth anniversary of my little sister’s death. She died in a car accident when we were both teenagers. I’m 26 now and think about her all the time. This evening, after a rough day, I was sitting on my bed, staring at her picture on my nightstand when a sudden gust of wind blasted through my bedroom window for a few seconds, blowing my sister’s photo off my nightstand, directly into my lap. 3. Today, I was sitting on the subway, exhausted, in a horrible mood. Lately I just haven’t been happy. I’ve been struggling with my weight, my job, and life in general. About 15 minutes into the subway ride, the elderly lady across from me got up, moved next to me, and said, “You’re beautiful. I’m not joking. I was thinking it, and I wanted you to know.” I smiled, thanked her and asked, “Do you usually complement strangers?” “When I was your age, a woman my age sat next to me on a train. Her compliments saved me from doing something stupid. And today, I’m returning the favor.” MMT

4. Today, it’s been exactly 15 years since we parted ways after we had a fling during a family camping trip in Wyoming. He gave me his home phone number before we left, but I lost it. This was before Google and Facebook. It was harder to find people back then, and I didn’t even know his last name. But 5 years ago, when I first opened my Facebook account in college, I connected with a few friends, and it turned out we had a mutual friend the whole time. He recognized my photo, contacted me and the rest is history. We’ve been married for 3 years now. MMT

5. Today at the beach, I ran into my old boyfriend from high school who I haven’t seen in 8 years. We broke up because his dad was in the military and had to move to the east coast. They moved away during our junior year in high school, and we kept in touch for awhile, but eventually lost touch. I recognized him from a distance because he was wearing a tye-dye shirt we made together for a summer beach party when we were sophomores. The kicker: I was wearing my matching tye-dye shirt, which I haven’t worn in years. We hung out the entire day and have a date this evening. MMT

9. Today, my boyfriend’s (and best friend’s) parents became my official legal guardians, 3 months after my parents died in a car accident. Jake and I have been friends since we were 3 and dating for 4 years now (since 8th grade). His dad hugged me when it became official, and said, “You’ve been a daughter to me for over a decade now. 10. Today, a man dropped several coins into a charity box we keep in our lobby. I told him he was very generous. He replied, “I just want to do my part and give what I can.” This man is homeless. Our office manager allows him to sleep under the large overhang on the backside of our building, and also brings him bagels and donuts when someone buys them for the office. MMT

11. Today, I found an old hand written note my mom wrote when she was a senior in high school. On it is a list of qualities she hoped she would someday find in a boyfriend. The list is basically an exact description of my dad, who she didn’t meet until she was 27. MMT

12. Today, I finally got around to sorting through a box of my son’s personal items that his Army unit shipped to me after he was killed in January of 2011. In the box I found a journal my son updated every night while he was overseas. The final entry, dated Jan 6th, 2011 is only one line long. It says, “I will not kill anyone this year.” MMT

13. Today, our daughter – our only child – earned a full academic scholarship to Yale University – the school she’s wanted to go to for as long as I can remember. She starts next fall. My husband and I have been working two jobs for the last 12 years so that we could pay for her undergrad tuition. Today, her hard work just gave us the best gift in the world: time. Now that we don’t have to pay for her tuition, we have enough money to retire almost 10 years earlier than we had planned. MMT

I took out my husband’s handgun, put it on the kitchen table and stared at it, contemplating suicide. As I sat there, the phone rang, it was the doctor. He said, “You’re perfectly healthy. 16. Today is my 18th birthday. Just over 18 years ago a woman was faced with the harsh fact that she had already had four miscarriages and one stillbirth. As she was pregnant for the 5th time, doctors informed her that her pregnancy was extremely risky and life threatening to her health. They said there was a good chance either the baby or her wouldn’t make it. She chose to give the baby a chance anyway. My mom and I both made it and are still totally healthy to this day. MMT

17. Today, my 10-year-old bone cancer patient, who was just downgraded to hospice care this morning, looked around his room, which is filled with stuffed animals, flowers and balloons, and said, “I hope when I get to heaven, God gives me all the balloons I lost when I was alive.” MMT

18. Today, when she woke up from a six month coma, she kissed me and said, “Thank you for being here, and telling me those beautiful stories, and never giving up on me… And yes, I will marry you.” MMT
